Tourism Tax

In 2002, the residents of Festus voted in favor of implementing a Hotel/Motel sales tax of two percent (2%) in order to promote the improvement of recreational facilities available to tourists in Festus.  This tax is to be paid to the City Finance Office quarterly and filed with reports including gross daily rental receipts for each three (3) month period.  You may view and print the Tourism Tax Remittance Form below.  Voters in 2012 increased the tourism tax to the state maximum five percent (5%) and approved using those extra funds to be used for promotional materials and events.

The Festus Tourism Commission consists of five (5) members appointed by the City Council of Festus.  One member is a representative of the hotel and motel industry, two are to be active in the tourism industry, and the other two members are to be members of local general business interests in the City of Festus.  The members are appointed for three (3) year terms which are staggered and serve no more than two consecutive terms.  There is no compensation for serving on Festus Tourism Commission.

The revenue raised from the Festus Tourism Tax is deposited into a special trust fund only to be used for purpose of promoting tourism.  The Commission administers the moneys within the limits of the budget approved by the City of Festus.
