Sgt. Doug Wendel has been with the Festus Police Department since 1995. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Southeast Missouri State University and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Lindenwood University. Sgt. Wendel served as a patrol officer until 2002 when he was promoted to Sergeant. He served the next five years on the road as a Patrol Sergeant. In 2007 he transferred to his current position and is assigned to oversee the support services division of the Festus Police Department. His main function is that of the department system administrator. This includes the oversight of the computer network, hardware, and software the department utilizes and making sure they are kept up to date and running correctly. Sgt. Wendel also serves as the commissioned officer over the dispatch and clerical divisions. While he does not work directly in these departments daily he is working with both the dispatchers and clerical staff hand in hand to make sure everything is handled properly. Those duties include oversight of all the paper and digital records kept by the department, along with maintaining all the equipment in dispatch (i.e. Radios, computers, etc.) to make sure they are functioning correctly for the safety of the citizens and officers.
Some of the many other duties for Sgt. Wendel include the oversight of the vehicle maintenance program making sure all of the patrol vehicles are kept in good working order and that all of their equipment is up to date and operating correctly, grant administrator to include both the writing and oversight of all grants for the department traffic and otherwise, oversight of the Evidence Division of the department, and the oversight of the local RCCEEG lab. RCCEEG is the Regional Computer Crime Education and Enforcement Group. It is a task force of officers from the St Louis Area that investigates all different types of computer crime, although the main function is the investigation of child pornography cases. While Sgt. Wendel oversees and helps out in the Festus lab, it is manned full time by a Detective from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office assigned to the task force.
